Why should I correct a hearing loss?
Hearing is an essential to your quality of life. Helen Keller said that loss of vision means losing contact with things, but loss of hearing means losing contact with people. A hearing loss influences the interaction between family and friends causing communication barriers between people who love and need one another. Anxiety, insecurity, isolation, and depression can affect those who do not hear well. Scientific studies indicate that the negative psychological changes due to untreated hearing loss may be reversed by hearing aid use.
Why shouldn't I wait until my hearing loss gets worse before I do something?
Your long term success with hearing aids will likely be greater when you start wearing hearing aids earlier. People who start when their loss is more minimal do not have as much adjusting do to as those who wait until their loss is more moderate or severe. Sometimes people who wait will not allow their aids to be programmed to the optimal level because they simply cannot tolerate it.
Why do people refuse help for hearing loss?
Denial or minimizing a hearing loss frequently occurs, because people incorrectly associate it with aging and disability. Some are apprehensive about the challenge of learning how to use and insert a sophisticated, miniature electronic device. Others may feel shame and embarrassment about wearing a hearing instrument.
Why was I told that my hearing loss cannot be helped?
There have been instances where people with hearing loss in one ear, with a high frequency hearing loss, and even with nerve damage have been told that they cannot be helped by hearing aids. While this may have been true in the past, it is no longer the case. Newer technology has made it possible for 95% of people with hearing loss to be helped with hearing aids.
What is the cost for a hearing evaluation?
A basic hearing evaluation in our office costs $75.00-$110.00. Our specialized testing is performed by an audiologist and includes evaluating your hearing sensitivity for tones, and for speech. Also, the audiologist will check your ears for wax or abnormalities prior to the testing. We participate with a variety of insurance companies. Many insurances, including Medicare, will cover the cost of the testing minus any deductibles or co-pays. Call our office for details about your specific plan.
